EVENT SUSTAINABILITY MISSION
Since 1996, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia has established itself as a trailblazer at the forefront of fashion weeks worldwide, and an internationally recognised destination for fashion and agenda-setting discussions.
AFTER 25 YEARS, WE HAVE A HUGE OPPORTUNITY TO DEFINE THE FUTURE OF FASHION WEEK AUSTRALIA, AS AN EVENT THE GLOBAL FASHION INDUSTRY LOOKS TO AS A LEADER.
Established in 2019, our vision is for MBFWA to become a leader in sustainably produced fashion events globally, with a special focus on reducing single-use plastic and minimising, measuring and balancing our carbon footprint. We advocate for a sustainable and responsible fashion industry that plays its part in the challenges that we face today, and our hope is for Sydney to be recognised as a hub for sustainable fashion innovation.
This year, we invite our designers to join us on this mission and encourage you to consider how you can also reduce your environmental impact. If you’re visiting MBFWA in Sydney via air travel, we encourage you to track the greenhouse gas impact of that travel, and ultimately to balance it through carbon offsetting. We will also let you know where we place our carbon offsets, if you wish to join us.
Below are some of the initiatives we are implementing that aim to reduce the environmental impact of our event:
Waste Reduction Strategy
Since 2019, guests will continue to see the reduction of paper and waste on-site across our event. The transition of printed content to digital versions, and the elimination of paper products in official event gift bags will significantly reduce printed collateral utilised across the event platforms.
We will continue to work alongside Australian designers, as well as other event partners, to ensure a sustainable approach to the show production process, evaluating each step and the waste generated through material selection, the manufacturing process and packaging.
Elimination of Single-Use Plastics
In 2019, we introduced the total elimination of single-use packaged water bottles in our back of house areas, and offered no plastic bottled water in guest areas. This step-change initiative will directly reduce the environmental impact of MBFWA, achieved through the use of reusable and glass bottles or water refill stations. In total we estimate avoiding 11,000 single-use plastic bottles.
Energy Effeciency in On-Site Showrooms
We have redesigned the on-site shows at Carriageworks to increase energy efficiency through the introduction of state-of-the-art lighting technology. Where possible, the lighting rigs used within the show rooms will be built almost entirely from LED fixtures, to achieve maximum efficiency within power consumption.
To compensate for the climate change impact of international delegates flying to and from Australia, all international flights will be booked through one travel agent, to allow for simple calculation of the carbon footprint of these flights. We will then balance the impact of these unavoidable flights through purchasing carbon offsets and helping forest regeneration at the same time.
We’re bringing together change and opinion-makers from Australia and around the globe, to engage and inspire event attendees and industry representatives, to generate conversation on the environmental issues facing the industry and our planet.
